DIY Pretend Play Supermarket

DIY Pretend Play Supermarket

I made this pretend-play supermarket for my kids, Phoenix and Connor, last spring.  I wanted to learn to work with wood and use power tools, so this seemed the perfect beginners project to learn to use electric power tools, specially because the main components of this grocery store are 2 ready-made Ikea shoe shelves and 2×4′s. It was surprisingly easy to put together, and was ready to open for business in a couple of hours.  What took the longest was stocking up the newly created Organic Market.  I didn’t really want any cheap plastic stuff in there, so I ended

Easy Last Minute DIY Halloween Hoodie-Based Costumes for the Kids

Easy Last Minute DIY Halloween Hoodie-Based Costumes for the Kids

Well, Halloween is tomorrow, and let’s face it, sometimes we procrastinate and by the time we attempt to buy a decent costume for our child, there is nothing left, but just the rejects in two sizes too big.  I’ve put together a list of costumes that are very easy to put together.  Start off with a basic hoodie, and add some details out of felt. You can easily do this with a temporary hand stitch (recommended if you want to reuse the hoodie) or a glue gun for a super quick (and more permanent) result.  Click on the tittle or

Last Minute Halloween Pumpkin Decorations: Kid Friendly and Mess Free

Last Minute Halloween Pumpkin Decorations: Kid Friendly and Mess Free

I have been so preoccupied with things that I haven’t even noticed Halloween is just around the corner. For the sake of the kiddos, and to create Halloween memories for years to come, we had a couple of Halloween activities with them, mainly involving the traditional decorating of pumpkins. We tried to keep it mess free and as child friendly as possible.  Both Phoenix, 4, and Connor, 2 1/2, were delighted to create these freaky-yet-cute gourds.  Daddy helped them to carve out a small opening for the mouth, and they had a blast putting in the vampire fangs and gluing

DIY Child Halloween Costume: Astronaut

DIY Child Halloween Costume: Astronaut

Halloween is quickly approaching. So, in the next couple of days I will be sharing some of my favorite DIY Halloween costume ideas from around the web.  To start off the Halloween spirit, today I am sharing the DIY Child Astronaut costume tutorial I used last year to make my son Phoenix’s dress-up ensemble.  You will need a few items from the dollar store, empty plastic see-through soda bottles, a plastic bucket, rubber boots, white spray paint, white pants and white turtle neck t-shirt.  The costume can be easily put together in under one hour….and gets the trick-or-treater lots of

New in the Shop: Crocheted Child Raccoon Hat with Earflaps

New in the Shop: Crocheted Child Raccoon Hat with Earflaps

I always say my greatest inspiration are my kids, Phoenix and Connor. I create based on their interests and personalities. My latest invention is no exception. They have been into the movie “Over the Hedge” (the main character is a raccoon), and Phoenix suggested a raccoon hat. I thought that was a great idea. My only problem was the raccoon color palette of grays and blacks does not really make a great color palette for children’s items. Out the window go the grays and blacks, and in come a vibrant orange and blue. Voila, playful and colorful crocheted raccoon hat

Owl Sandwich

Owl Sandwich

Phoenix used to eat absolutely everything as a baby…then something changed and he became a picky eater. He loves fruit and some raw vegetables, but has trouble with cooked veggies and he is big on textures…and presentation. If it doesn’t look right he declares after a quick glance “I don’t like it”. Mommy is always trying to make his food fun to entice him to eat…yes, it takes a bit of extra effort, but it is worth it. Here’s an owl I put together for him with pita bread and lots of veggies:

Panda Party Hat Tutorial

Panda Party Hat Tutorial

Here’s  a quick tutorial on how to make a panda party hat for your child’s panda-themed party: {TOOLS + MATERIALS} white, black and pink cardstock (I actually used craft foam, just because I got the urge to make them very late at night and that was all I had handy) a party hat (to use as a template) elastic scissors, glue gun {HOW-TO} Begin by tracing the party onto white cardstock, mark where the elastic will go.  Cut your newly traced hat.  Use the glue gun to glue the edges in place. You now have a basic white party hat.
