I made this pretend play supermarket for my kids last spring. I wanted to learn to work with wood and use power tools, so this seemed the perfect beginners project. This is a very quick and easy project specially because the main components of this pretend play supermarket are 2 ready-made Ikea shoe shelves and 2×4′s.
The pretend play supermarket was a breeze to put together, and was ready to open for business in a couple of hours. What took the longest was stocking up the newly created Organic Market. I didn’t really want any cheap plastic stuff in there, so I ended up making some fruits and veggies out of felt. This is still a work in progress.
I had known for a while that I wanted to make the pretend play supermarket so for a few weeks I saved the little wooden crates our tangerines come in. They were the perfect market accessory to store the fruits and vegetables.
Here are some more images of my finished pretend play supermarket:
I had planned to make little grocery bags for the pretend play supermarket, but I went to Michael’s and found these adorable bags on sale for $0.99. I couldn’t resist. I got a couple of them…one for each kid to avoid warfare.
The kids love this supermarket…and so do I. It is a great tool to teach them to count, colors, etc, all while having fun.
My supermarket was inspired by this one: Ikea Supermarket DIY {under $50}
I found their instructions invaluable and easy to follow, but I ended up modifying mine a little bit…mostly out of necessity because they used 3 Ikea shoe racks, and I only had 2 at home…and I was so impatient to start this project right away that a trip to my local Ikea was just unthinkable.

i love it!!
Thanks for stopping by…and thanks for the inspiration.

Wow! My brother and I used to play supermarket, but this is waaaay cooler than anything we had! Lucky kids!
Hello there – just found you on another site, but decided to find you at your own. Thanks for visiting the ColdhamCuddlies’ site and look forward to many more contacts in the future. Love the idea of the play supermarket – fun, as well as educational! Am about to follow you, so hope you’ll continue to do the same for me! Cheers
Thanks Isobel. I look forward to more contacts in the future as well. Thanks for stopping by.
This is such a creative idea! I love that you’re teaching your children to shop organic too.
Thank you for the comment and follow. I am following you now too!

You noticed the organic sign!! Yeah, we shop at organic markets, so it seemed natural to incorporate that in their pretend play. Thanks for stopping by. Have a great weekend.
How creative! You kids are so lucky:)
What a terrific market. Your children will talk about this for years to come – my Grandfather made tpys for his children and grandchildren, and the love these toys receive lasts many years after shop-bought toys are forgotten. What a wonderful thing to do for your children, and I’ll bet you had as much fun making it as they’ll have playing in it! Thanks for stopping by my blog too, I look forward to chatting/commenting again.
Hannah, thanks for your stopping by. And you are totally right, I had a lot of fun putting it together. Just like your grandfather, I also made a teepy for my kids’ playroom…they have lots of pillows in there, lights, and a small basket with books to encourage reading. They love it! Looking forward to interacting with you again.
How cute is all this! Why didn’t we think of this stuff when my kids were little?
